We are thrilled that our director Patti Wilson was recently invited to the University of Colorado Boulder to present a comprehensive overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and its impact on language development.
Patti's talk described the unique characteristics of individuals with ASD, such as disruptions in sensory processing, attention deficits, and the phenomenon of hyperlexia (superb visual pattern recognition). She outlined the key diagnostic criteria for ASD (from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or "DSM-V"), explaining the communication and social difficulties individuals with ASD face.
She also explained the differences between analytic and gestalt language processors, explaining how children with ASD may process language in large chunks before breaking it down into more traditional grammatical structures. The presentation concluded by discussing the importance of early detection and effective interventions, such as Floortime therapy, for improving communication and social skills in individuals with ASD.
Patti discussed the importance about creating a neurodiverse-affirming culture. The students engaged in a fullsome discussion around that topic. Patti highlighted the importance of self-advocacy and creating an inclusive environment.
